Kinja'd!!!

Sold my wagon last weekend and I am moving on from the "stance" scene. Im trying to decide what to get next. I don't know how to drive standard that well, and being a car guy, I think it is time I learn. I really want an Abarth, so to work up to getting one, Its time to find an old manual sedan to learn on.

Outside of about 1,500 miles between a couple pickup trucks and a rental car I hadn't driven stick before I bought my STI in 2007. Just had the 60,000 mile service done and the clutch is still fine. If you want and can swing the Abarth, get the Abarth now. The thing that will destroy a clutch is hard launches, clutch dumps and riding the clutch. Stalling it every once in a while as you're learning to drive a stick won't do anything worth mentioning.

Get yourself a used GTI manual. After you master stick signup for an autocross. You'll quickly realize how much fun you've been missing.

Wont fit my two kids in the back. Id love to have a Miata, Ive driven one around the block before, and it was a standard.

My wife doesnt drive, we have a 96 Camry as a beater, winter car, but that has 270xxx miles on it.

So if I bought a hot hatch or something, I could make that work.

I want to get into autocross, I have a few friends that do it. Both own FRS, and looks like its a ton of fun.

If your kids need help getting into car seats I'd say the Abarth is a no-go. If they don't need car seats I would make sure they fit before getting an Abarth. The back seat space is very very tight.

If you decide everyone fits I'd just go ahead and get it. You won't hurt it learning to drive a manual, since you obviously have the technical knowledge of how to do it. All you need is some practice to get used to driving it every day.

I know how to do it, just not good at it. Ive driven a CRX, Sunfire, and a Miata before.

Both kids are front facing, 2 and 4.

That's exactly how I was when I bought my Abarth. I'd driven manual, but not on a daily basis. About 2 weeks into ownership I couldn't imagine driving any other way.

That looks serious. Hopefully you're not STANCE4LYFE. I mean, do you have to get "jumped out" of the gang?

Hope you get your FIAT 500, hope its -.5% camber is sufficient.

If you're tempted to stretch or stance, refer back to this advice: don't.

Tire blew because I didnt get an alignment and had bad toe.

Couldnt find a flat rack close to me. And if I buy a Abarth, its staying stock.

I drive my 12 year old daughter and her friends in the back of my Abarth all the time. They love it. Now my older boys, both 6'2", on the other hand....

The Abarth is a fine car to learn stick on. The car is light and the shifter and clutch are both pretty forgiving.

Good advice. I learn to drive stick when I test drove my second car, which was the first manual trans car I owned. Driving it home was embarrassing but a ton of fun.
